WHO AM I?
"Hey there, my name is Ben.
I am a counsellor and psychotherapist who is committed to helping men develop the skills and tools to thrive in the face of life's challenges.
Importantly, I am a man who was very resistant to counselling - and eventually found it to be life changing.
I know what it's like sitting on both sides of the therapy room and I spent years telling myself all the same stories that men often tell themselves."
Do any of these sound like you?
“I’m all good. There’s nothing wrong with me.”
“I can figure this out myself.”
"If only I could sort out [money, relationship, health] I'd be right."
“I’m supposed to have my sh*t together.”
“I don't wanna pay for someone to sit there and judge me.”
“I just need to let off some steam.”
"I just need to finish [insert project] then I'll get round to it."
You're not alone. Roughly 20% of Australian men actively voice their mental health challenges and many more unfortunately suffer in silence.
I’m a big believer in something called Posttraumatic Growth, which is the response to challenging and traumatic life events that results in positive personality change: strength, resilience, courage, self-awareness, authenticity, more engagement in life etc. My personal interest is in the intersection between brain science, wisdom traditions and the use of altered states of consciousness for personal development and health.
I decided to commit to working with men because I know that while stigma around mental health is changing, it’s still bloody hard to take that first step. My goal is to make sure that men have a place to be themselves, to not feel judged, and to feel proud that in working on life’s challenges they’re becoming better fathers, sons, brothers and husbands.
I spent the majority of my young adulthood living and travelling across different countries across three continents (The Americas, Europe and Asia) and spent several years in Latin America. I have first-hand experience using therapy, meditation and other neuroplasticity-informed practices in order to manage and recover from depression, anxiety and chronic pain.
